About
Coppa Italia
The Coppa Italia, or Italy Cup, is an annual football competition that has been a significant part of Italian football since its inception in 1922. The tournament is organized by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and involves teams from Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, and some from Serie D, the top four tiers of Italian football.
The competition's early years were marked by inconsistency, with several editions not being held. However, since the 1958-1959 season, the Coppa Italia has been held annually without interruption. The format of the competition has also changed over the years, with the current format being a knockout tournament.
The Coppa Italia is of great importance in Italian football, as it provides a route for teams to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The winner of the competition is granted a spot in the group stage of the Europa League. If the Coppa Italia winner qualifies for Europe through their league position, the Europa League spot goes to the highest-placed team in the league not already qualified.
Juventus is the most successful club in the competition's history, with over a dozen Coppa Italia titles to their name. Other teams with multiple victories include Roma, Inter Milan, and Lazio.
Overall, the Coppa Italia is a prestigious tournament that adds an extra layer of excitement to the Italian football season, offering teams a chance at glory and European qualification.
