The upcoming TdP will be the arena for SafeR project tests that are supposed to increase riders safety. If their results are positive, it is likely that the tested ideas will be implemented in other races (incl.grand tours).
Test 1:
Yellow cards for riders, officials and staff for dangerous behaviours.
Test 2:
Limited radio connection between team officials and riders. Two stages with a 2 radio devices per team limit and one where no rider will have radio connection with the team car whatsoever.
Interestingly, radio connections are believed to bring additional risks. An example of that is when the road gets narrow and every rider gets a signal from their team at the very same moment to keep as close to the head of the peloton as possible...
On a side note, I have always been wondering how it ever worked so that the riders without any radio device in the old days would even know which riders and with what time record are in the breakaway (to decide if to chase or let them escape...). These days it's easy because every rider can easily get any info from the radio I suppose and react immediately.
