About
Sheffield United Football Club was founded in 1889 as an offshoot of the Sheffield United Cricket Club. The club joined the Football League in 1892 and won the First Division title in 1898, along with the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915, and 1925.
Sheffield United's success was relatively short-lived and they were relegated to the Second Division in 1934. The club spent most of the next four decades in the lower tiers of English football, with brief spells in the First Division. Despite this, Sheffield United managed to reach the FA Cup final in 1936 and the semi-finals in 1961, 1993, 1998, and 2003.
In the early 1990s, the club enjoyed a revival under the management of Dave Bassett. They achieved promotion to the new Premier League in 1992 but were relegated after two seasons.
The club faced financial difficulties in the late 2000s and were relegated to League One in 2011. However, under the management of Chris Wilder, Sheffield United achieved promotion to the Championship in 2017 and then to the Premier League in 2019.
Despite a strong first season back in the top flight, the club struggled in the 2020-2021 season and were relegated back to the Championship. Chris Wilder left his position as manager in March 2021, ending a successful five-year tenure.
