About
Newcastle United Football Club, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, was founded in 1892 by the merger of two local clubs, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. The club has played at its current home ground, St. James' Park, since its inception.
Newcastle United gained promotion to the First Division in 1898 and won their first major trophy, the Football League Championship, in 1905. They followed this with FA Cup victories in 1910 and 1924. The club enjoyed much of its success in the early 20th century, winning four league titles and six FA Cups by 1955.
However, the latter half of the 20th century was marked by fluctuating fortunes. They were relegated to the Second Division in 1961, only to bounce back and win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969. The club faced further relegation in 1978 and 1989, but also enjoyed periods of success, including promotion to the Premier League in 1993 under the management of Kevin Keegan.
The early 21st century saw the club regularly competing in the upper half of the Premier League and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. However, they were relegated again in 2009, before immediately winning the Championship in the following season to secure a quick return to the top flight.
In recent years, Newcastle United has faced a series of ups and downs, including another relegation in 2016 and immediate promotion back to the Premier League in 2017. As of 2021, the club continues to compete in the Premier League. The club was taken over by a Saudi Arabian-led consortium in October 2021, ending Mike Ashley's controversial 14-year ownership.
